January 1st of this year and I&#8217;m going to start unpacking it today.\u00a0 Last year, I posted the 2025 Ramble on January 2nd and then didn&#8217;t get around to breaking it down until March 13th.\u00a0 Well, I&#8217;m two months ahead of the game, being only January 11th today.\u00a0 It might take me a few days to get this finished and published but it should still be up officially in the same month as the 2026 ramble.\u00a0 Well, that&#8217;s enough of that ramble for now.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s get to it.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: 'Arial Rounded MT Bold','sans-serif';\">\u00a0 \u00a0In case you didn&#8217;t view the 2026 False Ducks New Year&#8217;s Day Video Ramble, here \u00a0Let&#8217;s start with the Polar Dip that didn&#8217;t happen.\u00a0 We had 7 inches of snow New Year&#8217;s Eve.\u00a0 In the past when I&#8217;ve done the Dip, I&#8217;ve driven out to North Beach here in beautiful Prince Edward County.\u00a0 Unfortunately, North Beach is a day use only Provincial Park that is closed in the winter.\u00a0 We have to park on the road that leads to the entrance of the park, walk around the gate (low security because everyone does it) and then walk about half a kilometre out to the beach area.\u00a0 My wife didn&#8217;t want to walk through that half kilometre of snow so she suggested we go to the beach in Wellington, Ontario as we can drive right up to the beach front.\u00a0 I went swimming a few times there this year.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a photo font-family: 'Arial Rounded MT Bold','sans-serif';\">\u00a0 \u00a0I wrote 21 blahgs in 2025.\u00a0 It&#8217;s probably not a record for me but it was one more than 2024 when I wrote 20 blahgs.\u00a0 Sometimes the blahgs were a means to an end.\u00a0 If I had written a new short story, I would debut it in a blahg with the title of story and a little write-up.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/?p=6733\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">THE KEYS OF HIRAM CRENSHAW<\/a> was one of those short story and short blahgs.\u00a0 Click on the link to read both.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: 'Arial Rounded MT Bold','sans-serif';\">\u00a0 \u00a0I wrote another story in June of 2025.\u00a0 I thought it was an interesting premise and certainly something different for me.\u00a0 The story and the blahg had\u00a0 the title <a href=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/?p=6858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">THE POCKET PAL\u2019S GUIDE TO MURDER<\/a>.\u00a0 Again, click the link to read it.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: 'Arial Rounded MT Bold','sans-serif';\">\u00a0 \u00a0In April, before I wrote and posted &#8220;The Pocket Pal&#8217;s Guide To Murder,&#8221; I finally got around to finishing a short story I had started in July of 2023.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a full on science fiction story called, <a href=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/?p=6775\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">THE SODA MACHINE.<\/a>\u00a0 I had set it aside for a year and a half and when I got back to it, I wasn&#8217;t sure where to start again.\u00a0 I threw this funny line in as a placeholder:\u00a0 &#8220;what Elvis would do&#8221; and then the words came and I kept the line.\u00a0 It also came around and helped me complete the end of the story.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: 'Arial Rounded MT Bold','sans-serif';\">\u00a0 \u00a0&#8220;The Pocket Pal&#8217;s Guide To Murder&#8221; and &#8220;The Soda Machine&#8221; had science fiction tones to them.\u00a0 So did two stories, I wrote in 2024, <a href=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/?p=6420\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HOW GRANDPA PUT DOWN THE ROBOT UPRISING<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/?p=6299\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">THE HOHNER COMET<\/a>.\u00a0 We had been doing some renovations at home and I was downsizing my desk and the contents.\u00a0 I came across the first short science fiction story that I ever wrote,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/?p=7123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR OF EARTH<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not great but in the blahg, I post the story and how I let Chat GPT write a sequel to it.\u00a0 That&#8217;s all I&#8217;ll probably do with that story.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: 'Arial Rounded MT Bold','sans-serif';\">\u00a0 \u00a0Every year, well at least since 2013, I have written a Christmas themed story.\u00a0 Most have been works of fiction but I think there was a Christmas observational piece in there somewhere.\u00a0 This past Christmas, I decided to write a fictional story based on our Christmas traditions at my home.\u00a0 It turned out well,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/?p=7203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">THE TWO AND TEN\u2026A CHRISTMAS GIFT EXCHANGE<\/a> is a moving story and became my second last blahg of 2025.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: 'Arial Rounded MT Bold','sans-serif';\">\u00a0 \u00a0The one blahg I didn&#8217;t get around to writing in 2025 was &#8220;How About You, Delbert Robinson.&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s a short story that I have struggled to finish for the past few months.\u00a0 I know the ending but getting from the middle to there has been challenging.\u00a0 I hope to finish it this year and post a blahg with the completed story.\u00a0 I also discovered today that I started writing a short observational piece back in April of last year.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t finish it either but I think I will try and get back to it.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what I have written so far:\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">MY GREEK HISTORY<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">By<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Scott Henderson<\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is a history that I have left for myself.\u00a0 It\u2019s all true or most of what I have remembered.\u00a0 Every now and then I pull out the memories and shake them up like a snow globe and watch this beautiful scene I\u2019ve kept wrapped in a protective bubble.\u00a0 It\u2019s nothing embarrassing but until now I have never felt it necessary to put this to paper.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Even now, this history is a like an archaeological site where you have to carefully peal back the layers to get at the true story underneath.\u00a0 My Greek history is almost forty years old and parts of it, the underlying layers, are even older than that.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I could begin with my first year of University but that part of the history will remain concealed.\u00a0 Let me summarize by saying I made some mistakes and had to move out of my University residence and drop down to part-time studies.\u00a0 That\u2019s the only fossil that pieces together with the almost forty years story but it\u2019s not the only part that has been buried in this account.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In my last year of University I moved back into residence and parts of this story begin to reveal themselves.\u00a0 When you\u2019re a third year student and you move into a dormitory of sorts with people younger than you then you can draw on those previous experiences to guide you as a mature adult among the newbies.\u00a0 The problem was, I had no experience.\u00a0 I had, like this history, buried myself away and had no friends and no experiences.\u00a0 Academia had been my focus and the socialization aspect of higher education had eluded me.\u00a0 I felt something was missing and advocated to return to residence life.\u00a0 I had to really convince myself as much as I did the University.\u00a0 For two years, I had kept a low profile and that in itself was enough to convince the administration that I deserved a second chance.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is where I take liberties and sift through minutiae and only gather the important bits.\u00a0 My studies get sorted and set aside.\u00a0 They are not important in this other than to say I did well in my courses and they were not a burden to the rest of this history.\u00a0 That socialization I spoke of, and specifically the lack of it, came more into play than the studies.\u00a0 I made friends.\u00a0 It\u2019s as simple as that but a core piece of that is brought to the front.\u00a0 I made a girl friend.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The fact that I was an English studies major should challenge me to correct that statement that I made a girl friend.\u00a0 Indeed, she wasn\u2019t manufactured.\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t made up or fictionalized.\u00a0 She was a girl who became a friend and later\u2026but I\u2019m getting ahead of myself.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019d like to jump forward in time and say that the non-constructed girl friend and I have been married for almost thirty-eight years.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know why I say \u201calmost thirty-eight years\u201d as if there\u2019s some doubt that we\u2019ll achieve that goal but it\u2019s easier to round up than down and it\u2019s important to highlight the fact that we\u2019re still together despite the summer of my Greek history.\u00a0 That, too, is getting ahead of myself.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Let\u2019s summarize in an effort to get the important fragments into the light where they will have significance.\u00a0 I had dropped down to part-time studies in my first year, moved into residence again in my third year, made friends, and made a girl friend.\u00a0 That\u2019s what falls out when you sieve through the totality.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The building I lived in during that third year had a first and second floor as well as an east side and a west side. I think in total, there were 25 students living throughout the building.\u00a0 Despite taking numerous English studies courses, I never got around to studying Rudyard Kipling or I might have been disheartened by his poem \u201cThe Ballad of East and West\u201d containing the iconic phrase \u201cEast is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet.\u201d\u00a0 In my narrative East and West did meet however and the rest is history.\u00a0 Well, at least the rest is pre-history because I have yet to get the Greek history portion.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There were only two females on the first floor of the east building and five males.\u00a0 Of those, only one of the females ranks in this chronicle and four of the males, including myself, have any significance.\u00a0 Although I\u2019d like to think I ranked more than enough significance.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: 'Arial Rounded MT Bold','sans-serif';\">\u00a0 \u00a0Speaking of short stories, with a reference to ones that were not written by me, I made a concerted effort to read all 79 short science fiction stories written by the forgotten author, William Morrison.\u00a0 This was inspired by re-reading one of my all time favourite short science fiction stories, &#8220;The Sly Bungerhop.&#8221;\u00a0 I manged to pen four blahgs about my effort,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/?p=7023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">THE SLY BUNGERHOP ET AL<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/?p=7066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WILLIAM MORRISON&#8230;HALF-WAY THERE<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/?p=7133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WILLIAM MORRISON AGAIN&#8230;NOT DONE YET<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/?p=7166\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WILLIAM MORRISON, THE FINAL 10&#8230;LET THE COUNTDOWN BEGIN!<\/a>\u00a0 I still have some non-science fiction stories of his to read, mystery, detective, and western themed and a few others I haven&#8217;t tracked down.\u00a0 I highly recommend reading some of Morrison&#8217;s science fiction stories.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a reprint of a biography of Morrison published in \u201cStartling Stories\u201d September 1942:\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Meet-the-author-WM.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"1197\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/falseducks.com\/theblahg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Meet-the-author-WM2.jpg\" width=\"369\" height=\"761\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 15pt; He joins the Cincinnati Red Stockings baseball team, meets Mark Twain, and falls in love with a woman of the times.&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s one of my favourite books and I reread it so I could read the sequel, &#8220;<i>Two in the Field.<\/i>&#8220;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: 'Arial Rounded MT Bold','sans-serif';\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/m.media-amazon.com\/images\/I\/314GjQkzsdL._SY445_SX342_PQ99_.jpg\" width=\"287\" height=\"445\" \/><br \/>\nIt was a great read but the original is the best.\u00a0 I also discovered that Brock wrote another baseball themed story, &#8220;Havana Heat&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/m.media-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51SrAAS-I7L._SY445_SX342_PQ99_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 15pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: 'Arial Rounded MT Bold','sans-serif';\">This book takes place in the early 1900s and is told from the viewpoint of a hearing impaired baseball player with connections to the New York Yankees.\u00a0 Great book.\u00a0 All three are definitely worth reading.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 15pt; Still don\u2019t know how it happened. I slipped somehow and went out the back side onto my backside.<\/em><\/h4>\n<h4 dir=\"auto\"><em>We have a clawfoot tub with an oval shower surround so there\u2019s shower curtains on both sides. Our tub goes across diagonally so there\u2019s very little space behind the tub and up to the wall. You can look at the two photos below. Sometimes one of our cats likes to crap back there and we have to climb over into the space and clean it up. Yesterday, the shower curtain slowed me down but I fell into that small space on the other side of the tub with the shower curtain between me and the inevitable cat crap left by our cat. I was in lots of pain and screaming and yelling for Jeanette. She was asleep in another part of the house and couldn\u2019t hear me.<\/em><\/h4>\n<h4 dir=\"auto\"><em>I managed to wriggle out behind the back of the tub; all the while screaming my head off. I got out to the front side where my metal clothes hamper was sitting and started banging on that and eventually Jeanette heard that and came to my rescue. She helped me up and then helped clean the cat litter off me so I could get dressed and go to the hospital. I thought my neck was going to snap off and felt every bump on the way to Picton. Two rounds of X-rays in Picton and then sent to Belleville for a cat scan. Nothing broken but if they\u2019d done a cat crap scan they might have found some on my side or back.<\/em><\/h4>\n<h4 dir=\"auto\"><em>I had to wear a neck brace all day but 8 hours later, I was back at home without the brace. Advil and Blue Ice gel and I\u2019m back to work today but my neck is still really sore. I can\u2019t watch any tennis matches for a while.<\/em><\/h4>\n<div class=\"x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a\">\n<h4 dir=\"auto\"><em>What\u2019s the lesson here? I don\u2019t know. Don\u2019t shower alone? I\u2019m not going to admit getting old and needing grab bars. It was a fluke. I showered this morning and was fine but very cautious. I could have imagined what would have happened if I couldn\u2019t get out from behind the tub and the paramedics had to come. Paul McCartney performed for two hours and fifty minutes and didn\u2019t miss a beat. At one point a small stage rose in the air and he sang \u201cBlackbird.\u201d He came out for an encore waving a Canadian flag while members of the band waved the Union Jack and the pride flag. One of his encores was Mull of Kintyre with a Port Dover Scottish marching band joining him on stage. The guy is class and still has the chops. We went with our son Noah and his girlfriend Robin. We had an amazing time.
